The 302 Redirect | Chronicles of Everything #04
Hello everyone, Silas here. Long time no read.
Coming to you with a blog post to summarize my 2024 and talk about my expectation for the future.
TLDR:
I got into coding and didn’t have time to make videos anymore. But I am gonna try to be doing livestreams in 2025.
Same time last year my expectation was that I could do the following:
Get better at making simpler Videos and more of them.
Write articles/blog posts and base more complex videos on those.
Keep growing the channel.
Now let’s take a look at my YouTube statistics for 2024.
You can see that I started doing an alright job with consistent uploads. I quickly figured out you can do videos pretty easy if you just sit there, read some article and then rant about some new stupid AI thing. Depending on how you sell it, you can get people angry, pissed off and watching your video too. I try to only do that when it is for the greater good.
An example of that is probably my most successful video this year. The video talking about Microsoft taking a screenshot of your PC every 5 seconds. That was a bad practice, that people should be angry about.
I found those videos pretty boring and draining to make. It is just really uninspired work. If it is an interesting topic I enjoy recording but i hate editing these videos. Because there is almost no creativity involved.
Then in July i stopped making videos because a friend and I wanted to take part in the Pirate Software Game Jam 15. Neither of us knew how to make a game or how to make a game for a Game Jam. We started a project that is way too ambitious and big, we did not finish it in time. It still is being worked on.
Why am I mentioning this?… Let’s look at my Github activity.
There you have it. I have gone from putting free time into making videos, to putting my free time into software development.
This view is kind of wrong, because I don’t push super often. So most of those empty days i was still writing code but either didn’t commit or didn’t push it.
I used to write a fair bit of code in the past, mostly C++ for microcontrollers, but that got boring to me. Mostly because the main project I was working on, I started during my Systemelectronics Engineering degree. Which was firmware for running full motion simracing seat motors and PC software to control it.
Very interesting and cool while I had access to that hardware, but I have no plans of building a DIY motion seat myself.
Writing code for something you don’t have access to and don’t care about can be hard.
With learning and using Godot engine came a lot of other software dev content being recommended to me on YouTube. Prime and Theo. With Prime I specifically remember one of the first videos I saw of him being with Casey talking about how X86 needs to die. Or the myth around it. Which was immediately interesting to me. Great channel.
Theo I only remember seeing him I think because I saw a hate video about him. Saying how Theo is just a paid Vercel shill and how he is lazy and just stealing content. I did not really know what to think, but i started watching Theo after this experience. Almost as a hate-watch. Because at that point I had a pretty strong stance of “Code was meant to be compiled and you have to know the hardware its running on”. And partly that is still true. I do still believe coders should try to get deeper understandings of tech.
I eventually had watched enough to actually want to look at web development and how things work. Maybe I would like it.
I started with pure HTML and CSS and annoyingly, I really liked it. Then later moved on to Laravel, Tailwind, now Livewire and yes also some JS. But I am fine with not using that language much, it still seems sucky to me.
I have a project which I am very passionate about, i kinda flip-flopped with what to make but I will talk about that when the time comes. Hopefully soon.
I have not declared full-on-hate on JavaScript frameworks yet though. But getting into JavaScript and then React seems like a wrong step for now. After i finish this project, or get it in a nice usable state maybe.
Also about Theo. I have watched his content almost daily for months now, starting off as a web developer hater and quasi-Theo-anti. But I quickly changed my mind on him the more I watched, especially in his longer videos you see how he is not just reading an article and farming money from it. He makes super long deep dives where he explains everything in his own words fairly well, showing his own examples.
Plus watching his livestreams and interacting with him on Twitter made me see that yes he is in fact actually smart, skilled and i like him now.
Though I am still gonna write some stupid “Vercel shill” based joke, just because its stupid and funny to me personally.
So what will happen now?
I will for now continue to focus on writing code in my free time.
But fear not, I do not plan on keeping the Internet free of content with me.
Initially i got on YouTube making Let’s Play videos and then later on livestreams where I would play games. My current Internet connection is pretty crappy and almost always just has such shit upload speed fluctuations that most streams just break.
I am getting fibre in January though, if it all goes to plan.
So the plan is to more often do livestreams, maybe playing games, maybe coding or reading tech stuff or news. Doing livestreams is significantly easier and nicer than recording and editing and publishing videos. So i believe I can make pretty consistent streams, while having a full time job and writing code.
So, stay subscribed if you want to.
Have a good start into 2025 and I will talk to you later.
Thanks for reading.
